2006 Mexico Youth Mission Trip
MEXICO MISSION TRIP
2006
Back home…
Once again, the Lord demonstrated His faithfulness by using this band of misfits to be a blessing. Our theme verse was, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10.
The good works consisted of building 3 homes, encouraging the local community with the love of Jesus Christ, and participating in a neighborhood fiesta. The fiesta was especially valuable because it was the first time any of us had experienced an event like that, and we were challenged to come out of the comfort zone the building process often creates; when conversations became awkward with silence, we were not able to leave to finish building a wall or such. These encounters with the locals provided an opportunity to rely on God’s faith to calm our anxiety… “Be still and know that I am God.” – Jesus

Another aspect of our adventure that never ceases to keep my fire for Youth Ministry lit is the transformation that occurs in the lives of the teens. The heat and dirt of Mexico breaks a person to the point of a major decision… either they decide to trust God as the source of their survival, or they choose bitterness and anger to deal with the pain. Most choose God, although some take longer than others. But, we are a patient bunch of leaders. It is the Holy Spirit’s task to change the heart, not ours.
Lastly, I am proud and thankful to be part of a congregation that consistently demonstrates a love for teens and recognition of their ability to be effective workers for Christ at such a critical time in their lives.
Peace in Christ,
Joel Brown
