Indonesia Worker Retreat

From May 8-12, workers from Aceh were given an opportunity to gather together for a week of spiritual nourishment and reflection. The break was much needed as the staff has worked hard to complete the reconstruction projects related to the tsunami.

The retreat focused on two themes: reconciliation and calling to ministry. Speakers were invited to share along these lines. Prior to the retreat, we were looking for some new Board members to help steer the Aceh work. We wanted these people to come from the group currently working there, and had asked them to consider this position. The Lord worked it out for some of the potential Board members to speak. This was an excellent opportunity for them to get to know the staff as well as minister to them. After attending the retreat, the potential Board members agreed to sit on the Board. This provides a big answer to prayer for the ministry.

We started off the retreat by showing before and after pictures of the projects. The staff was encouraged to rejoice with the Lord for the great progress that has been made through their sacrifices and faithful service. During the week the staff were given an opportunity to debrief the tsunami experience. For many, this was the first time that they were taken through any type of debriefing. The laughter and tears truly ministered to their spirit.

Of course the retreat was not just listening to messages from the Word. The staff also had time for recreation. On the final day they went for a picnic at a nearby waterfall. Overall the staff felt renewed and refreshed after the retreat. We praise God for the generosity of Faith Christian Community Church for making this possible for us.

Here is a testimony from one of the participants who was close to burnout after over a year working in the area:

“I am so happy that once again God answered my questions and strengthened me to serve Him in Aceh. As I reflect on my experience in Aceh, I see how He prepared the way for me. He has a plan for me here in Aceh.
My heart as well as others from the staff was refreshed during the calm time of the retreat. It was nice not to have to worry about the projects in Aceh. Instead we could just listen to God’s voice through the Bible and the speakers. We played games, debriefed together as a team, and shared among ourselves.
‘What do you get from this retreat?’ one might ask. My answer is simply that I was so blessed by the program, the speakers, the donors and the volunteers who ministered to us. Knowing that they care for those of us in His service for the Acehnese has lifted my heart. That is enough for me. I do not know more. I feel broken when I remember all the people who still do not know Him, especially the Muslims of Aceh. I know that I do not minister alone but many are with me through their prayers.”
